Cherrapunji, locally known as Sohra, earns the title "Land of Living Root Bridges" for its extraordinary bio-engineered structures crafted by the Khasi tribe over generations. These bridges, grown by training rubber fig tree roots across rivers, include the famous Double Decker Root Bridge. Combined with misty valleys, thunderous waterfalls, and limestone caves, Cherrapunji offers a landscape shaped entirely by nature and tradition.

By Air: The nearest airport is Shillong Airport (Umroi), about 80 km away, though flight connections are limited. Most travelers instead fly into Guwahati's Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, roughly 150–155 km away, offering better connectivity, followed by a road journey via Shillong. By Rail: There is no direct rail link to Cherrapunji. Guwahati Railway Station, about 150 km away, is the nearest major railhead, from where travelers continue by shared taxi, Sumo, or bus via Shillong. By Road: From Shillong, Cherrapunji is about 55–60 km away, taking roughly 2–3 hours through scenic routes past the Mawkdok Dympep Valley. From Guwahati, the journey takes around 4–5 hours by road via Shillong. Shared Sumos and taxis run frequently between Shillong's Police Bazaar/Barabazar and Sohra Market. Getting to the Root Bridges: To reach the iconic Double Decker Living Root Bridge, travelers first drive to Tyrna village, about 12 km from Cherrapunji, then trek down roughly 3,000 steps into the Nongriat valley — a moderately strenuous 3–4 hour hike each way.
