Phobjikha – The Gangtey Valley of Bhutan
Phobjikha Valley, in central Bhutan's Wangdue Phodrang District, is also called "Gangtey Valley" after the 17th-century Gangtey Monastery overlooking it. This glacial, bowl-shaped valley is famous as the winter sanctuary of endangered black-necked cranes, which migrate from Tibet each autumn. Surrounded by the Black Mountains, it offers pristine wetlands, nature trails, and rich Bhutanese culture.

Travel guide
By Air: There is only one international airport in Bhutan, located in Paro. From Paro, travelers continue onward by road via Thimphu and Wangdue Phodrang to reach Phobjikha. By Rail: Bhutan has no railway network, so travel within the country relies entirely on road transport. By Road: From Thimphu, Phobjikha is around 130 km away, crossing two mountain passes, Dochu La and Lawa La, both around 3,000 meters, on a roughly 4.5 to 5-hour drive. The valley lies as a detour off the main east-west highway, so most trips combine it with stops in Punakha or Wangdue Phodrang en route. Renting a car or hiring a taxi from Paro or Thimphu is the most common way to travel; public buses to Thimphu or Punakha followed by a local taxi or bus are a budget-friendly alternative. For the adventurous, multi-day treks such as the Gangtey Trek (about 90 km over three days) offer an alternative overland route through rustic villages. Entry Permits: Entry Requirements: As with all of Bhutan, travel must be arranged through a registered tour operator, with the daily sustainable development fee covering accommodation, food, transport, and guide services.
Weather note
October to April offers pleasant weather, avoiding the heavy monsoon rains (June–September).
