Phuentsholing is often called the "Gateway to Bhutan," as it serves as the main entry point for travellers visiting the country. Sitting on the Indian border beside Jaigaon, West Bengal, it blends Bhutanese culture with Indian influences. Known for its peaceful atmosphere and clean, organised surroundings, it gives visitors their first glimpse of Bhutan's traditions before they head onward to Thimphu or Paro.

By Air: The nearest airport is Bagdogra Airport, about 160 km from Phuentsholing, taking around 4–5 hours by road after landing, with airlines like IndiGo, Air India, SpiceJet, and Vistara operating there. Paro International Airport (Bhutan's only international airport) is another option, roughly 150 km away via Thimphu. By Rail: The nearest railway station is Hasimara, around 20 km from Phuentsholing, taking about 40 minutes by taxi or shared jeep, with trains connecting from Kolkata, Siliguri, and Assam. New Jalpaiguri (NJP) is another well-connected option, about 3.5–4 hours away by road. By Road: From Siliguri: ~170 km (4–5 hrs) via NH27, a common route for most travelers. From Kolkata: ~700 km via NH27, doable by overnight bus or car. From Gangtok: ~180 km via Siliguri. Regular buses and shared taxis connect Siliguri/Jaigaon to Phuentsholing. Entry Permits: Indian nationals need a valid ID (Voter ID/Passport); foreign nationals require a permit arranged through a licensed Bhutanese tour operator or the online Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) portal before crossing at the Bhutan Gate in Jaigaon.
