Shillong – The Scotland of the East
Shillong, capital of Meghalaya, is fondly called the "Scotland of the East" due to its European-style architecture, diverse flora and fauna, and ancient monuments built by Scottish settlers. Perched at around 1,500 meters in the Khasi Hills, this hill station is also India's music capital, famed for pine forests, misty lakes, cascading waterfalls, and a vibrant rock-music culture rooted in colonial history.

By Air: Shillong has its own Umroi Airport, about 30 km from the city, though it has limited connections, mainly to Kolkata. Most travelers instead fly into Guwahati's Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, approximately 115 km away, which offers far better connectivity to major Indian cities. By Rail: There is no direct rail link to Shillong, with Guwahati serving as the nearest major railhead, roughly 100 km away. From Guwahati Railway Station, travelers continue by taxi or bus. By Road: The main route runs from Guwahati to Shillong via NH 6, covering roughly 100–120 km in about 2.5–3 hours under normal conditions. Regular state buses, ASTC buses, tourist shuttles, and shared taxis operate frequently between Guwahati and Shillong. The scenic drive winds through green hills, valleys, and viewpoints, though monsoon fog and rain can extend travel time.

October to March offers pleasant weather, avoiding the heavy monsoon rains (June–September).
