By Air: Tawang has no airport of its own. The nearest airport is Guwahati's Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, roughly 446 km away, well connected to major Indian cities like Delhi, Bengaluru, Kolkata, and Mumbai. By Rail: The nearest railhead is Tezpur, in Assam's Sonitpur district, though Guwahati offers better long-distance rail connectivity to the rest of the country. By Road: From Guwahati, it's roughly a 2–3 day drive covering about 446 km, typically broken up with overnight stops in Bhalukpong, Bomdila, and Dirang. The journey requires crossing the dramatic Sela Pass at 4,170 meters — one of the world's highest motorable roads — offering views of the sacred Sela Lake en route. Recent infrastructure improvements, including the Sela Tunnel, have made the route smoother and more accessible than in past years. Entry Permits: Indian nationals need an Inner Line Permit (ILP) to enter Arunachal Pradesh, obtainable online or from designated offices in Guwahati, Itanagar, or Delhi. Foreign nationals require a Protected Area Permit (PAP) from the Ministry of Home Affairs.
